[INTI x Sunview] Is Solar the Right Business Move Now?

In Malaysia, renewable energy is becoming more popular as a solution to environmental concerns and as an alternative to reliance on fossil fuels. With rising electricity costs and growing environmental concerns, businesses are starting to ask: Is solar energy the smart move?

As part of an employer project between Sunview & students of INTI, we conducted interviews with people around Subang Jaya to find out what Malaysians really think about solar energy. We were pleasantly surprised by just how aware Malaysians are of solar energy.

Many highlighted that solar energy is the most practical renewable source for the country. Given Malaysia’s tropical climate and year-round sunshine, it makes perfect sense to harness solar power as an accessible and efficient energy solution.

From our conversations, people understood that solar offers:

  • Lower maintenance costs,
  • Reduced carbon emissions,
  • Long-term cost-savings

Many believe that expanding its use could help cut down electricity costs, lower national energy expenses, and even boost real estate values.

So, what is investing in solar for you?

Well, it isn’t just about sustainability — it’s also about financial security, lower operating costs, a competitive edge in an eco-conscious market, and securing a future where energy is cleaner, and within our control.

By embracing clean energy, businesses can contribute to driving Malaysia’s net-zero journey by 2050, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for its people.

Why Businesses Should Go Solar?

In Malaysia, businesses are increasingly considering implementing sustainable energy solutions. Sustainability isn’t just a nice-to-have anymore — it’s a business strategy.

According to interviews conducted with participants in Subang Jaya:

  • 50% believe sustainability is key to long-term business success.
  • 30% emphasised its positive impact on the environment.
  • 20% highlighted its importance for future generations.

And it’s not just businesses thinking green — consumers are driving the change. In our survey:

  • 40% prefer products made with recyclable materials.
  • 30% choose products with reduced plastic usage.

Many customers are now willing to pay more for brands that prioritise sustainability, meaning businesses that adapt will build stronger brand loyalty and gain a competitive edge.

To meet these growing expectations, companies can take practical steps such as using recyclable materials, reducing plastic waste, and adopting alternative packaging solutions. Not only does this contribute to environmental preservation, but it also strengthens brand reputation and customer loyalty.

Overcoming the Cost Barrier of Sustainability

The adoption of sustainable approaches is not without challenges — One of the biggest hesitations when it comes to solar is its cost. Our findings revealed that:

  • 60% of respondents acknowledged that while the initial investment is high, the long-term savings make it worthwhile.
  • 30% cited the upfront costs as a major challenge.
  • 10% believed it was financially unfeasible.

Solar energy isn’t an expense — it’s an investment with real, measurable returns.

And here’s the reality:

Businesses that embrace sustainability often experience long-term advantages:

  • Solar cuts utility bills and lower operational costs:
Our survey found that 93% of respondents recognize solar as an effective way to reduce utility bills.
  • Improves brand reputation:
Consumers trust businesses that take sustainability seriously, by integrating ESG principles into their business strategy.
  • Government incentives:
Many businesses don’t realize there are rebates and financing options to help offset the costs.

By transitioning to solar, businesses can significantly lower their energy costs while reducing their carbon footprint — aligning with global sustainability standards. This is where solar energy presents itself as a game-changer.
